Pinon Canyon: A Case Study for Art and Resistance

Presenters: Kaylinn Gilstrap, Rebecca Goodwin, Grady Grissom, Doug Holdread, Bill Sulzman, and Evan Weissman

In this session, panelists will discuss art as a tool for resistance and share the intriguing story of how ranchers and artists from southern Colorado joined forces to defeat the US Army. In 2006, the US Army set out to expand the Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site, a US Army training base located in Las Animas County. Local community members, many of them ranchers whose families had been on their land for generations, joined forces with artists and pushed back against the acquisition of their lands and destruction of their way of life by using art as a tool for political organizing and resistance. Join members of this unlikely coalition as they discuss this fascinating history; and together, let’s imagine the ways art might serve to bring together diverse coalitions and bring about change in the future.

Building Your Community's Music Scene

Presenters: Lisa Gedgaudas, Vidushi Goyal, Dave Heinrich, Sarah Hubbard, Melissa McGowan, Kenny Vasko, and Liz Vasko

Music programming and scene-building is one of the most effective ways to put energy into both arts and economic development initiatives. We'll discuss what programming has been successful in the City of Lafayette, and what lessons we've learned along the way. Including: knowing your audience (local, tourism, etc), taking inventory of your existing scene, expectations of musicians and crew for performances, exploring spaces for music programming, adding music programming to existing events and attractions, and partnering and collaborating to create organic momentum in your music scene. We will also include a short music performance by two of our panelists, who collaborate as "Mr. Knobs."

Cultural Movement Assembly

Presenters: Brian Corrigan, Jesse Martinez, Marissa Morrow, and Tanya Mote

This Cultural Movement Assembly (CMA) is designed to cohere the art and culture ecosystem as a frontline in the struggle for justice. Our goal is to build a collective political analysis of the current moment and the systemic root causes of our problems. We will envision the world we want to create and plan how to get there. From this initial assembly, we will design collaborations, develop and implement action plans and grow the cohesion and unity necessary for building power. Since we are gathering as a cross section of the field, our discussions will consider positions, precarity, and power. We won't walk out of this assembly with a laundry list of actions, but we will know how to become an unsettling force on the journey to collective liberation.

Interdependence Day

On Friday, June 5, from 12:30-2:30 p.m., in commemoration of the United States' 250th and Colorado's 150th birthdays, we're gathering for a picnic at the Trinidad History Museum to celebrate our Interdependence. Warm Cookies of the Revolution will lead an exploration of how much we rely on each other, how our neighborhood heroes past, present, (and future?!) keep us safe and inspired, and how truly interconnected we all are. Come enjoy local stories, culture, food and talent.

This event requires registration on a first come, first serve basis. The first 150 registrants to select that they would like to attend on their registration form will receive confirmation and information via email closer to the event. If you are not in the first 150 registrants, there are various sessions, as well as many wonderful local restaurants, you can participate in during the lunch block without registration.
